OK. I am white, but not Canadian. So I haven't seen any racism against me, but I do know that Canadians are talking to me about other races in a way which I find totally unacceptable. They don't say such and such race is smelly to those people, but when you are alone with the Canadians, then, they say that to you. ....s are very smelly. ....s are stupid, etc. etc. I usually don't hear such remarks in the US, but I always hear them in Canada. OK. It is a good thing that Canadians share all those with me, but I don't think they should ever say stuff like that.

Don't try to find excuses for your racism  It's disgusting to see your bullshit theory...Japanese is nationalist but they don't discriminate other races! Same thing as Chinese. lol i'm sorry, i'm both white am Canadian, and though i don't believe we are a very racist country, the discrimination is there. I'll admit, white people everywhere seem to have a sense of entitlement when it comes to general trust and respect, and in Canada it's evident in the larger cities. But I lived in Toronto until I was 17, and there was a bit of moderate racism. Nothing was mentioned outright, but there were certain groups that didn't like eachother or interact for cultural reasons. When I moved to a smaller town (10 000 ppl) the racism was not nearly as visible, most likely because there were very few people of other races around. In Toronto i went to a Highschool of 2500 kids of mixed race, whereas in Gravenhurst I went to a school of 400 with 4 black kids and 7 Natives. You may say that in Gravenhurst the people weren't racist because they didn't know very many people of other cultures, but Muskoka is a VERY popular tourist spot (mostly Chinese tourists because of Norman Bethune), and I think it is just a tolerant area.
i do disagree with the numerous statements about how racist canada is and how tolerant it is in the states. i do not see a whole lot of racism in canada. It is there and sometimes it is so blatant its disgusting, but it is by no means widespread. The country we hate on the most is the USA. I don't know why the rest of the country doesn't like americans, but i personally have just had too many bad experiences with them. Its mostly the stupid illogical jokes that grate on my nerves, but there have been a few genuinely hateful comments made to me.
No, I don't ride a polar bear, a dog sled or penguins (wrong ****ing continent) to school. I don't live in an igloo. It snows a lot in winter, but its 75°F to 100°F from late May to September in most parts of Canada. I've seen three moose and 5 beavers in my life and all in the past year when my parents moved to Muskoka(cottage country). We aren't all obsessed with hockey. We don't live off of poutine, peameal bacon (or Canadian bacon as its called in The States), and maple syrup. We have a TON of national pride, just look at the Vancouver 2010 olympics, but we are very tolerant of other cultures; people come to our country because we are a "Cultural Mosaic" rather than an American Melting Pot. I say about, not aboot (though in th east coast you may hear this SOMETIMES!). I don't wear seal skins for clothes. I can BARELY speak french.

I hear you say Hey, or 'Eh', a lot as well. Are you all fat? Are you all lazy? Did you all vote for Bush? Are you all members of the KKK? Are you all gun-totling maniacs? Are you all racist? Are you all homophobic? Are you all religious zealots? Are you all intolerant of other cultures? Are you all obnoxious when you are in other countries? Are you all fat and lazy? Do you all uncaring for global problems?
those are all american stereotypes I've heard, and I know they aren't universally true. I don't joke about they when I meat americans, but Americans seem to want to joke about every single stereotype they have ever heard about Canadians within the first 20 minutes of knowing them.[/i] |
