UOIT Is not an easy school to graduate from, easy to get in to yes. Why? because they needed to build a student body, now they are over capacity and it is more difficult to be accepted.
I do not know who theses students are who are 4.0s, unless they are business students, any one with half a brain can get a 4.0 in business.
This school is excelling in science and technology, so engineering, math physics, biology and chemistry. And a degree is not easily attained, last year UOIT had about 10 chemistry graduates. So 10% of the class actually graduated. |

I agree with Guest at 10:21. I am a current student and graduate of UOIT in science and I only know of one student who has achieved a >4.0 GPA in my program. Like chemistry, about 10% of students in biology graduated.
At one point all schools had to accept students with lower grades in order to maintain an increasing student body. Eventually, as the university begins to expand and compete with larger universities, the entrance grades will increase. No, I do not agree that it should be referred to as "the MIT of the north" (No university in Canada is equivalent to MIT)and yes, Oshawa is a terrible city. But I do not think that it means that UOIT is any different from other Canadian universities.
Although small, I feel UOIT has a lot to offer. It's a new school trying to strive for a good reputation and for the amount of time that it has been open I feel that it has done a pretty good job of doing so. In the end, to an extent, it doesn't matter where you attained your degree. Only what the degree is in and the person behind the degree. |

Truth is, UOIT really is not a particularly good university. BUT, it is new, therefore students there get more opportunities in doing things that students in other schools would have to compete for. This means that the experience component for many students will make up for the lack of knowledge base that students in other schools have.
I personally attend UOIT, and I wish I was somewhere else. But the opportunities that they offer here, and the closeness of the professor to the students, is something that other schools probably can't offer. I'm currently working for the school too, and they do take learning seriously, its just they don't have enough funding for it. I plan to go to another university after this though. I am definitely not stick around the "Shawa" as we call it here. If you can attend another university, do so, but if you want to learn and not have to think about competing with your peers all the time, then try a newer university.
Also, I would like to remind you all that the quality of education is not fully determined by the level of the school, it is also determined by the level of the students attending. The reason why we say "this school has more reputation" is just that, reputation, nothing more. More students mean more of a challenge, more challenge equals more stress/competition, ultimately resulting in a school that everyone wants to go to, because they hear that it's good (even though it's the students that are making it great - e.g. Waterloo). You start spreading rumor that a school is good, it will eventually turn great. Waterloo used to be a no-namer until blackberry made it great. Who started RIM? Student project group. Reputation. |
