News release
Next Wave takes another look at UOIT
September 22, 2006

UOIT has once again caught the eye of a leading science publication, this time earning an in-depth feature story examining its rapidly growing reputation.

'A New University Means New Jobs in Ontario,' appeared in the August 25 edition of Next Wave, the online publication of the globally respected magazine Science, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It is the second time in less than a year that Next Wave has turned the spotlight on UOIT. An article profiling the university and Dr. Peter Berg's involvement in the research program Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS) appeared last October.

The latest story is a 1,200-plus word assessment that among its many topics looks at UOIT's rapid growth in enrolment and faculty; its innovative multidisciplinary approach to both education and high-quality research in the science program; and the state-of-the-art computer technology that UOIT incorporates into its teaching programs, setting the university apart from other Canadian institutions.

University professors profiled include Professor Doug Holdway, who spoke to the excitement of helping build curricula for a new university and being able to undertake groundbreaking research in conjunction with his Tier-1 Canada Research Chair position in aquatic toxicology. Assistant professor Brad Easton, a hydrogen fuel cell materials specialist, also provided content for the article by discussing why he felt UOIT's collaborative multidisciplinary environment was a perfect fit when he joined the Faculty of Science this past July. While at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia where he was conducting postdoctoral work, Easton didn't feel he quite fit into any of the traditional departmental niches.

The article concludes with Dr. William Smith, dean of UOIT's Faculty of Science, discussing the university's mission to make UOIT the MIT of the north. He states that "UOIT's goal is not to compete directly with other universities, but to focus on important areas of study and research that aren't covered extensively elsewhere."

ok buddy, you get high marks because 1. you get open books and 2. your curriculum is the easiest in cannada...perhaps because its new and the school realizes that they won't be getting many students with 80's and 90's averages so they go easier on them fag. uoit is nothing if they continue to offer open books and offer such an easy curriclum where highschool kids with 50 - 60 averages are easily pulling off 4.0s

my friend with a 62 average from high school is at UOIT. you know what his GPA is? 3.8. There is seriously something wrong with that school. it's the ONLY university in canada who i'd never hire anyone from and im a believer of same quality of education in most Canadian schools but this is one exception.

In my experience, closed book exams are much easier to write. This is because the professor, in setting a closed book exam is forced to limit the scope of the material to be tested. An open book exam often has no such limits.

You are either in high school or have never taken enough university level courses to encounter a real tough open book exam. Your argument that open book exams are "easy" reveals your lack of experience with post secondary level course work.

A real open book exam will almost guarantee you will NOT readily find the answers to exam questions in the book or books you're allowed to bring with you. I've seen people bring stacks of books and notes into the exam room only to fail.

To succeed in an open book exam requires true understanding and mastery of the course material. Good memory alone will not get you through a well prepared open book exam.

i know ppl who attend uoit coming from highschool who are getting 3.9's 4.0's at the school how can you explain that uoit defenders? do they all of a sudden become intelligent...every single one of them with 60's in high school are getting marks that other universities could only dream of..there is indeed something wrong with the school..too easy of a curriculum or too easy of a professor perhaps...this is not preparing the students to handle difficult life situations in engineering or business when they graduate. whereas schools like mcgill .uoft waterloo push your limit and prepare you better for your job.. this school is corrupted. mcgilland uoft and waterloo students bust their as*es to get a 3.0 while uoit students especially their business students are screwed after they graduate...the guy i'm talking about from highschool had a 63 and now literally has a 89% average...WOW...and he barely passed calculus

So right... Our open book exams are so diffciult. the only reasdon we have high gpa s is because we r smarter than most other university students.

yeah i know i love their argument, "we are the mit of the north, why? because we have a similar name!" also, you get higher marks not because you are smarter or the school is better its because your profs make your exams grade 2 oriented. everyone does not become smarter all at once like that. everyone i know that goes to uoit average went up from highschool and i'm guessing a lot more ppl's averages shot up as well ...a lot... like 100% of you...and you are not the mit..you can't simply say that you are the next mit because you share words "institute of technology" dumb as* argument
