well...this is really a blow... but I kinda have this realization because I deeply think the things we learn here are waaaay to easy. As long as you do your homework regularly, even a normal kid can get a least 80 or even 85, 90 in calculus, which considered to be the hardest math in canadian high school. And the course is so repetitive and boring as well. You can't even skip steps because teacher will mark you wrong. My chinese friends compare their math to ours and say our grade 11 math is equivalent to their grade 8-grade 9, and grade 12 is about their grade 10-11. He also mocks how our science courses are extremely easy because he say they learn our grade 11 biology in their grade 7, our grade 11 chem in their grade 8, and our grade 11 physics in their grade 9. Our grade 12 sciences are just about their grade 11 and in easier version. I didn't believe in what he said at first becasue he always made fun of me and say i am so slow when doing math. i asked my another friend who is from Taiwan to verify it. and he said it is true. that's how they learn in Taiwan as well. So I think this contest does show how the top canadians student are not that bright in math compared to those brilliant elites from other countries. but don't be discouraged by this. this is a alarm for us to work harder. hopfully canadians can do better on the next contests.

So many ignorant people. As someone ACTUALLY in academia, I'd say (researcher reputation and graduate program reputation, aka what matters):

1) Toronto
2) UBC
3) McGill
4) Queen's/Waterloo tie

5) Second tier school's

Come on~ Why bother to argue which one is the best for math. In my point of view, Canadian sucks at math, therefore there is no point to debate which university is better. I'm from India, and we are all amazing in math. The proof is? You can easily know from the result of The International Mathematical Olympiad. I bet 80% of the Canadian don't know what the hell is this contest. Don't be down if you never heard of this because we all know you are narrow-minded and ignorant. This contest is basically for the brightest of the brightest. So I won't be surprised if you don't know this. Generally, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, USA, and India rank the top every year. Go see the official website if you don'y believe me.

What he said maybe true in some senses, but i don't like the way he says it. His tone is reallyl make me think he's mocking at us Evil or Very Mad

I'm a Chinese born in Canada and I want to shed light on some of the issues about Canadian Maths vs Chinese Maths. Just to let you guys know that it's true that they learn all the math, physics and chem shits ahead of us (in gr.10 when we learn it in gr.11, etc) but that's because they learn everything before gr.11 and gr.12 is all review so they can do the university entrance exams. The reason why they are good in math also is based on rote learning which is basically memorizing and drilling it into their head, which basically has no creative thinking applications. Therefore yes they are good in the maths and sciences, but are they good in all subjects? do they participate in school activities? sports? cause if they don't they are missing a BIG part of what they need to make it to medical school or business school. Also, their universities are sub-par compared to UK, US and Canadian universities. Western universities are easier to get into but staying and getting that degree is harder than a university from Asia where getting in is the hardest part but the course and content are not as rigorous. And to the guy that's from India, I'm surprised that you included India as the country that is top in math, if you checked the 2009 IMO rankings, India is 28th, Canada is 18th. Not to say that India's math is bad or Canada's is good, and u could argue that half of Canada's team is Chinese but then why would you include the US when half their team is Chinese as well? I'm open to debate on this topic, for i have insight on the education in mainland Chinese system, Hong Kong system and Canadian system.

Although it's for high school students only, but those who win the contest will go to university with their bright intelligence. So this means they are still competitive compared to the west or even better. Also, the west universities are better only because they speak English. Speak of individual intelligence, Asian (especially Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese, and Indian )are way better. For example, Caltech, and MIT is largely consisted of Asian, and a lot of them are immigrants who just finish they high school studies in Asia. So this is the proof that they are good in high school and also good in university, and the result of IMO does mean something!

Europeans and Indians have advantage over chinease because of the language issue.
They have more interests than just books.
