McMaster degrees are worthless. Employers don't care about McMaster. They want McGill, U of T, Queen's, Western and Waterloo grads.

To anyone who says a non UofT / Waterloo etc. degree is undergrad engineering degree is worthless, you are unfortunately mistaken.
If you have your engineering undergrad from ANY university in Ontario, you will have no trouble being hired by someone in Ontario.
Ontario engineering employers know about, and have to conform to, P.E.O., and other engineering organizations' standards. And in order for a university in Ontario to give you an engineering degree, they have to follow P.E.O. standards for curriculum. This means that, for example, a computer engineering student at McMaster vs. one at Waterloo will learn the same principles and ideas that will allow them to perform the same job.
As a student who went to a private, Catholic, all boys high school in Toronto (which I refuse to name, but have provided enough information to figure out) I learned VERY quickly that universities and employers do not care AT ALL where you come from, they only care about marks (possible extracurricular) and results. |

McMaster is generally better than either Queen's or Western for engineering. With the possible exception of UofT, none of the universities in Canada with a well known business school are much good at engineering. Most strong engineering schools in Canada don't have high ranking biz schools. |

These contests only test how good of an automechanic technician apprentice you are, nothing to do with engineering. Designed to cater to technicians/trades people rather than engineers. Engineers get paid to THINK, technicians and trades people (see college graduates) get paid to DO. |

If designing and building a race car from scratch optimizing speed, handling, performance, mileage and cost can easily be executed by "technicians", then more of them would have entered the race. I don't see any entries from well respected technician diploma granting colleges like SAIT, BCIT, Seneca or George Brown. It's mostly senior 4-th year engineering students who took part. Yes engineers think for a living, but their ideas must also translate into tangible and useful designs.
You seem clueless of what an auto mechanic does. Perhaps the next time your car has mechanical troubles, get it checked out by an engineer? |

No, you would get it checked out by an automechanic, which is basically what these people are doing in that ridiculous contest. An engineer would never be doing grease monkey work like that. Automechanic installation and repair involves all of the above you mentioned (cost, mileage, performance considerations etc.). You will never see a REAL engineer in the REAL world doing technician bullshit like this, they will be in an office environment somewhere doing calculations and such. |

You are an idealist my friend. Engineers would have to sit down at their computers and perform all the necessary calculations and analysis first BEFORE building anything like a car. This isn't just installation and repair work by a bunch mechanics. Of course, they'd have to be able to tell a good weld joint from a bad one. What's really required to be successful at such a race event is coming up with a good concept, followed by synthesis/design, project management and proper execution, not to mention decent driving skills. Good project management ensures efficient utilization of the various skills and resources the project team brings. Not every engineer has what it takes to be a good mechanic and vice versa. In this case, the students have to be BOTH engineer and mechanic to be successful. After all, engineering is suppose to be fun. Shuffling papers... is not. Sadly, most engineers I've met in my travels tend to shuffle paper all day or stare at a computer screen. A few lucky ones get to travel and do some actual field work or maybe even get their hands dirty. But that's life. |

That's the point, this contest isn't what engineers actually do in real life, so what's the point, might as well have a chess match or basketball game, anything. It's pointless. |
