My IQ is 140. I am hardly a dumbass. But look at my story...

I was a crap student in high school. In fact, I got thrown out of HS and I had to get my OSSD via night school. I sat in class with some real demons (it was sort of a wake up call for me).

When I got my 30 credits (this is back in the 90s, I think they've changed the rules somewhat), I went to college (St. Clair College, Windsor). I was a computer science major. I hated it. I liked computers but as a hobby, not as a career choice. I didn't drop out, but I think I got the lowest GPA in the college's history. It was less than 0.5! I kid you not. They told me to withdraw. And so I did.

I then worked for a few years and I finally returned to post-secondary about 3 years after my stint at St. Clair College.

I enrolled in University of Windsor, Political Science and History (honours BA). I loved it. I kicked as*. I took Roman history, German, linguistics, oceanography... All these cool classes. I loved the variety and for the first time ever I found something that interested me and held my attention. I maintained a 9.5-10.0 GPA easily and without studying like a maniac.

I finished it and now I am at Seneca. Let me tell you something. Seneca is a lot harder than university. It is more demanding and you have to attend classes - otherwise, they will lower your final grade.

The only difference between college and university is that universities are oriented towards theoretical knowledge and they offer different kinds of programs. Colleges are hands-on and they teach you practical skills. Way more co-op and way more opportunities to learn on the job. At least that has been my experience. For example, I had never ever had to do a presentation before I came to Seneca. Not once. At Seneca, there have been times where I had to do 3-4 a week. It's all about gaining skills, attaining practical knowledge and learning by doing.

Saying that only stupid people go to college whereas "smart" people pick university is insane and has no basis in reality.

Universities do offer better quality, though. You cannot teach at a university level unless you have a PhD or are a PhD candidate. At the college level, every Tom, Dick and Harry can be an "instructor." That's the only thing I really dislike about college. But hey, again, it's about practical knowledge and most of the instructors come from the industry and they do know their stuff, but not all of them know how to teach others.

And, yeah, who lied to you when they said York was a shitty university? Come on, don't think with your arse... York is a top-notch school. Certainly one of Canada's best. It's a great place to learn and you won't be sorry if you ever go there. Toronto, McGill, Queens, UBC and possibly York are the Top 5.

My 2 cents...

I've taught in both community colleges and universities. I have met many brilliant people in both contexts, but as BothWorlds wrote, motivation is the key - if you are doing something you really like in university or college, you will do well. How do you know what you like? You won't ever find out unless you try. Don't be worried about "changing horses in mid-stream" either. Some of the best computer programmers I ever met began as poets, and vice-versa.

You're a total idiot. I know plenty of people who hold post-graduate degrees and got their start by attending college. No, I won't name them in this troll forum. College and universities are only stepping stones to a lifetime of achievements for a these people who now have millions in assets.

So you have a university education. Good for you. So do I. Now pour me another vodka, son.

you such a f*** as* hole... there are many people who graduate college and then go on to university and then finish with their masters...and pour me another vodka too, boy

You are a big time loser who knows shit about education, i know a lot of people who holds bachelor's or master's degree with no freaking jobs in their fields, they settled for $10/hr after spending all those years for that stupid degree. They've been unemployed for longest time even now they are struggling to find the right job in their field, it's been so many years for them, still struggling. After spending so many years at Waterloo and UofT now they're thinking of going to college and get some real practical skills from there. I have master's degree in my hand and I am not proud of it. I just don't understand how idiots like you get into universities? I guess it has nothing to do with being intelligent.. You don't learn much from going to university, this is why college diploma holders has more chance of getting hired by employers out there than us who holds degrees..because colleges are all about practical skills what the employers really want, they don't give a shit about degree at all.

College is for losers, people with low IQs and drug addicts only. End of discussion.

what's wrong with York? A lot of college students eat with spoons cause they can't hold a fork. You be surprised how many people poke their eyeballs out because they just don't know how to use one. At waterloo, we use chopsticks. My friend at Ryerson uses his hands.

"Motivation is the key" is right.

It doesn't matter where you are, if you're a motivated student, it doesn't matter which university or college you attend, you'll always rise to the top.

Post secondary education is no longer the high school context where teachers are responsible for the student's learning. It's all up to you. Waterloo students can still flunk out and get addicted to cocaine. MIT students can still lie and cheat their way through school.

Seneca students can still go on and become world famous.

If you let the SCHOOL make you reputable, then you've not really done anything extraordinary. If YOU make the school reputable, then you've really done something.
