|

Hello,
In a year or so I will be graduating with a business degree in finance and I will probably be looking to further my education at some point. I see that there are many programs like the Mfin, which is very applied and designed for people with some work experience already.
How do you get to the acedemic side of finance? i.e. a graduate degree where you actually do research. The Mfin isn't a graduate degree in this sense. Would you do a masters in economics and cover a topic in financial economics? The problem is I basically only have a minor in econ.
This is just something that i'm considering ~ any input would be appreciated. |

A masters in economics is fair bet to begin with. It all depends on the rigidity of the masters program. Some can let you specialize, lets say in financial economics. Others are not as lenient. However a masters isn't a bad option if you want to start entering the academia perspective. However, be warned, the game theory and econometrics classes you might have taken are apparently a joke at the masters level. It is so heavily focused on math, accordingly to my friends that they recommend a math undergrad over any other one.
In truth though, for research and reliable funding, you will need to continue to the post doctoral level which allows a far wider degree of freedom in respects to specific academic subfields of interest |

You can pursue a PhD with an MFin. At least one MFin grad from the Rotman program has gone on to this route, though the MFin is a professional and not a thesis degree.
I'm curious as to why you want to be on the academic side. _________________ Whether you like it or not, school reputation matters. |

| I am just looking ahead and keeping my options open. No real intention of being an academic, I was mostly just curious. Thanks for the replies. |
